M1876-78 Grey Wool Collarless Field Shirt

The collarless flannel shirt come into service around 1876/77 though this become part of the great uniform fiasco as it had become known as

In 1878 the Quarter Master annual report said that troops had been in the habit of cutting the collars off their shirts (no explanation was given as to why)

So in 1878 the Quarter Master approved collarless shirts to be changed accordingly.

These shirts were eventually replaced in 1881/2 by the adoption of the dark blue flannel shirts.
