Cartridge Box .58 cal M1864
First issued in July 1864 as part of the U.S. Government cost cutting exercise in the Civil War, which was to save the Federal Government thousands of dollars by eliminating the brass and lead filled Cartridge box plate and replacing it with an embossed US Stamp. Also the brass and lead breast plate was withdrawn, in the post war years is was issued for the Indian Wars though by this time it was being worn on the waist belt until around 1870 when cartridge belts were being experimented with.
