M1872 Hoffman Swivel Holster
The regulation M1872 Hoffman Holster was a modified colt holster from surplus from the civil war, thought to give the mounted man more manoeuvrability.
The holster was converted at the Waterviliet Arsenal NY, to take most single action cartridge revolvers with attached sleeve for the wiping rod for the M1860 Richards conversion Colt. The new belt loop on the back is secured to the upper body of the holder by a brass swivel device that will allow the holster to rotate 360 degrees.
The Hoffman swivel holster was redesigned in 1874/5 into the half-flap holster.
