M1878 Canteen

The M1878 Canteen replaced the old civil war pattern though in reality it was a modified pattern with a new cover and a U.S. stencilled on the side.  The strap was made of leather with adjustable hooks and two snap hooks to fasten it to the canteen.  This was to set the new president with a small modification in 1885 to the strap so the trooper could fasten it to his saddle.  It served through the Spanish American War until its replacement in 1910.
