Civil War Jewellery Token – Reproduction
Civil War tokens were an early form of store card, privately minted out of copper between 1862 and 1864 mainly in the Northeast and Midwest.
The use of tokens had become as a result of the scarcity of hard Government currency, and by 1862 people had started to hoard coins along with gold and silver and later copper and nickel coins.
In 1864 Congress passed a law banning these of tokens and privately printed money by stores and banks.
Civil War Tokens were separated into three different types, Store, Patriotic and Sutler tokens and were differentiated by their design.
We have 12 of these tokens made of alloy, and you will be purchasing all of them.
These are hard to come by and are the only ones we have seen before.
