J Hooker come up with the idea for a badge for army commanders to identify their company’s in the field by means of distinctive corp badges cut from shaped colour cloth, though as the war progressed more elaborate ones appeared favoured by officers that were brought from Sutlers or fashioned by jewellers which come in coin silver, bone and wood.   They were often with Regiment, Corp and name engraved on them, they also looked on them as an early dog tag.
