James Arness was born May 26, 1923 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He earned a Purple Heart during World War II when his right leg was peppered with bullets in the battle of Anzio. In 1955, John Wayne recommended Arness for the lead role in Gunsmoke. It was one of the earliest “adult westerns,” centering around the exploits of Marshall Matt Dillon in the frontier town of Dodge City, Kansas in 1873.
