John Wayne was born Marion Mitchell Morrison on May 26, 1907 in Winterset, Iowa. He acquired his nickname “The Duke” from his childhood dog, Big Duke. His film career spanned 5 decades from 1926 to 1976. Throughout his career, he acted in, directed, or produced over 250 films. In True Grit he portrays Deputy U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn, who is described as a fearless, one-eyed U.S. Marshal who never knew a dry day in his life. Wayne won his only Academy Award for his performance in this film
